Whose Interest Does the Centralisation of Edo Market Women Serve?

Image
_By Osarumwense Precious Edos_ _When market women are declared instruments to deliver 60 percent of the none-existing 2.5 million votes, you know politics has crossed the line. Edo women are rising, and they will not be silenced._ The attempt to centralise the Edo market women association and place it under the direct control and influence of Chief (Dr.) Mujidat Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, the self-styled Iyaloja-General of Nigeria and first daughter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is not reform. It is an imposition. It raises a simple but fundamental question: whose interest does this centralisation serve, the women in the markets or the political elite desperate for control? Edo market women are not faceless pawns. They are the backbone of the Edo State economy, the custodians of culture, and the silent force that sustains families and communities. Their strength lies in their independence, in the way they have always organised their affairs organically, with accountability rooted in local...

Full Text on Tinubu declaration of state of emergency in Rivers State.

Image
Text of the Broadcast by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, declaring State of Emergency in Rivers state on Tuesday 18 March 2025 Fellow Nigerians, I feel greatly disturbed at the turn we have come to regarding the political crisis in Rivers State. Like many of you, I have watched with concern the development with the hope that the parties involved would allow good sense to prevail at the soonest, but all that hope burned out without any solution to the crisis.  With the crisis persisting, there is no way democratic governance, which we have all fought and worked for over the years, can thrive in a way that will redound to the benefit of the good people of the state. The state has been at a standstill since the crisis started, with the good people of the state not being able to have access to the dividends of democracy. Also, it is public knowledge that the Governor of Rivers State for unjustifiable reasons, demolished the  House of Ass...

Continuous use of "acting Chairmen" is illegal and undermines constitutional democracy — _group tells Edo governor

Image
_...As Okpebholo continue to disparage Tinubu's cherished achievement—local government autonomy_ By Gidigba Group Again, Gidigba Group, a Benin-based socio-political organization, reminds the Edo State governor, Monday Okpebholo, of the brazen illegality and anti-democratic posture that has become common place in Councils in Edo State, owing to the illegal occupation of Councils by "acting Chairmen", having evicted validly elected Council Chairmen and Vice Chairmen last December. The conceptualization of "acting Chairman" by the Okpebholo-led administration, is alien to our constitution and does not hold any validity in constitutional democracy; and for a four-month old administration to be so embroiled in brazen anomaly portends a dark spot in the administration's life. Today, despite the political inconvenience, many States have embraced local government autonomy, governors are interacting with elected local government Chairmen to advance development down ...

Image
60 Days of Meaningless "Wakawaka", Gov Okpebholo Set To Commission Painted Road Kerbs As Project By Gidigba group       In a shocking display of misplaced priorities, Governor Monday Okpebholo is set to commission painted road kerbs as a project after 60 days of inaction. The commissioning according to available information is expected to happen along Airport and Sapele road to mark his 60days in office He will also use the avenue to visit victims who were beaten by Agberos at Edo specialist hospital and UBTH. This move has left many questioning the governor's understanding of the state's pressing needs. The governor's decision to invest time and resources into painting road kerbs, rather than addressing more critical issues, has been met with widespread criticism. Many are labeling this move as a desperate attempt to create a semblance of progress, rather than a genuine effort to drive meaningful change. This lackluster project is a far cry from the promises ma...

Why Labour Party Candidacy Is Dead On Arrival

Image
In a bid for the gubernatorial candidate of Labour Party, Barr. Olumide Osaigbovo Akpata to subvert the State Character Principle of rotation by the majority of Edo whom they clamour for. I find it so bewildered and confounded to see the combination between Barr.  Olumide  Osaigbovo Akpata and Princess Oluyinka  Alufohai as the running-mate.This doesn't depict fairness, equity justice in a political shift of power to Edo Central.  From all indications, competence, character, capacity, value will be key factor to determine who becomes the Governor of Edo State come September 21, 2024. Let Edo people decide who the cap fits.

An esteemed Edo Indigene in diaspora, Lady Nekpen Obasogie has published her second book titled Benin Warriors and the British Colonial Rule in Nigeria . The first book, Great Benin: The Alcazar of Post-Colonial Culture and Its Relationship with the Europeans Since 1400 AD examines what transpired between the Europeans and the Benin Kingdom from 1400 AD to the invasion by Britain in 1897. She asserts that knowing what transpired in the past will help to understand the present and advance the future.  The Benin Kingdom has always been at the apex of European and African relationships from early contact to when Britain colonized Benin in the 19th century. Great Benin: The Alcazar of Post-Colonial Culture and Its Relationship with the Europeans Since 1400 AD diligently depicts how the colonial system, specifically Western education, amplifies gender exclusion, which shattered her childhood dream. In that book, Nekpen Obasogie critically analyzed how the patriarchal moral code embe...
