Oredo Vigilantes Arrest a Prison Escapee Oredo LGA is committed to ensuring safety of life and property  Following another day of intensive operation by the rejuvenated Vigilante group under the Oredo Council, a notorious prison escapee, Aisosa Odion ( alias Agada) has been apprehended.  Aisosa Odion was arrested at Dawson Lane in Benin-City yesterday as the security team quickly blocked his secret outlet for escape on locating the wanted convict. COVID-19 Lockdown: Over 500 secondary school student pregnant in Benin More than 500 pregnancies were recorded in secondary schools of Benin’s northeastern department of Borgou during the 2019-2020 school year, the Beninese news agency (ABP) reported from Cotonou. “Altogether, 547 out of 36,487 school girls regularly registered were pregnant during the 2019-2020 school year as against 431 cases in 2018-2019,” ABP reported, quoting Thomas Adam, a Representative of the child protection department of Secondary education and professional and technical training ministry. Adam attributed the increase in the cases of pregnancies to the long cessation of classes observed during the coronavirus pandemic. Although no strategy linked to the phenomenon was yet made public, several analysts of the Beninese society fear that the crisis linked to the COVID-19 affected the measures taken to eradicate early pregnancies in schools.

Obaseki approves recruitment of 500 professionals into civil service The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has approved the recruitment of 500 professionals into the state’s civil service. This follows projections by the Edo State Civil Service Commission that nine per cent of the state’s workforce will attain the age of 60 or 35 years in service within the next five years, while three per cent of the total workforce is currently at the directorate cadre.   Edo Joint Security Taskforce raid Upper Sakponba, comb riverine communities, arrest suspected kidnappers The Edo State Joint Security Taskforce at the weekend raided the Upper Sakponba area of Benin City and combed riverine communities, leading to the arrest of suspected kidnappers terrorising the state. The suspected kidnappers, comprising  seven males, were arrested around Ogbemudia oil palm plantation on Saturday, barely 24 hours after the taskforce kicked into action. Prior to the operation, General Officer Commanding 2 Division, Major General Omozoje, had intimated Governor Godwin Obaseki on their activity in the state, promising to bring a halt to the recent rise in criminality and lend support to efforts at capturing fleeing escapees from the two federal correctional facilities in Benin City, the state capital. Edo jailbreak: Escapees threatening policemen with text messages, says CP ADEYINKA ADEDIPE Escapees from the two correctional centres in Benin City, Edo State, have been reportedly sending threat messages to policemen who investigated and prosecuted their cases. The Commissioner of Police in the state, Johnson Kokumo , stated this on Saturday, adding that one of the escapees killed a prosecution witness from his village. The police boss stated that a doctor attached to the Central Hospital was hit by a stray bullet amid continued cult-related killings and shootings in the state capital. Kokumo , who said his men were making efforts to restore normalcy to the state, noted that three officers shot on Friday by hoodlums were recuperating.
