EDO STATE ALGON CONGRATULATES THE BENIN MONARCH FOR THE SUCCCESSFUL CELEBRATION OF IGUE FESTIVAL AND THE BEGINNING OF THE UGIEWERE
The Edo State Chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has felicitated with the Benin Palace on the successful celebration of the Igue Festival with the expression of best wishes to the Kingdom for the equally historic period of Ugiewere.
According to a joint statement by the Chairmen of the 18 Local Government Areas,’’ Ugiewere is one of the most locally celebrated and internationally recognized events in the Benin traditional calendar.’’ ALGON observed that Ugiewere ‘’was remarkable for its prayerful merriment as the legatees of Benin culture engage in reflections over the passing year and invocation for the coming year.’’
The statement which was signed by the Chairman of the State Chapter of ALGON, Hon. Evbareke Jenkins Osunde, noted that the Ewere leaf,which Benins ‘’ enthusiastically wave while jubilating and dancing during the festival carries deep historical relevance for the people and their heritage.’’ Among other cultural and spiritual symbols of the festival ’’ the Ewere leaf was said to have mysteriously and instantaneously offered protection to a Benin warrior in the face of dangerous aggression by colonial invaders ‘’, the ALGON Chairman stated.
Furthermore, ALGON said that the Ugiewere has grown over centuries as an inspiring and healing celebration with prayers for peace and progress in the in Edo Land.
The association prayed that the reign of Oba Ewuare 11 will translate to nurturing peace and durable prosperity for the Benin Kingdom adding that’’ the Uku Akpolokpolo will never diminish in stature.’’
ALGON Chairman, Hon. Evbareke Jenkins Osunde concluded the statement with Benin traditional salutations of : Obugie Oba mwan! Iselogbe Umogun mwan!Oba Ghator Okpere ,Ise !!!
