An esteemed Edo Indigene in diaspora, Lady Nekpen Obasogie has published her second book titled Benin Warriors and the British Colonial Rule in Nigeria . The first book, Great Benin: The Alcazar of Post-Colonial Culture and Its Relationship with the Europeans Since 1400 AD examines what transpired between the Europeans and the Benin Kingdom from 1400 AD to the invasion by Britain in 1897. She asserts that knowing what transpired in the past will help to understand the present and advance the future.  The Benin Kingdom has always been at the apex of European and African relationships from early contact to when Britain colonized Benin in the 19th century. The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, on Tuesday morning, officially resumed work in his new office at 7, Dennis Osadebey Avenue very close to Edo state government house. This was after noticing that his former office in government house have been locked up by security men attached to government house.  Recall that on Monday, Philip Shaibu claimed that he had not received any official communication for him to relocate to the new office, he also said it was only the civil savants attached to his office that was relocated.  He was seen standing  by the entrance to his former office, which was under lock. He was also seen making a call to an unknown individual, pleading to help him call the governor to know why his former office was locked. House of Rep Election: Tribunal nullifies LP candidate’s election, declares PDP’s Elumelu winner

 The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Asaba, Delta State, has nullified the election of the member representing Aniocha/Oshimili Constituency at the House of Representatives, Mr Ngozi Okolie. Ngozi Okolie of the Labour Party, LP, was declared the winner of the February 25 House of Representatives election in the federal constituency by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. The immediate past Minority Leader of the House of Representatives and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Ndidi Elumelu, filed a petition he before the tribunal praying it to disqualify Okolie. Elumelu, in the petition no EPT/DL/HR/06/2023, argued that Okolie was not properly sponsored by the Labour Party and that he did not resign his position as a public office holder. The three-member tribunal panel headed by Justice A.Z. Mussa, in it’s ruling, disqualified Okolie and declared the runners-up in the election, Ndudi Elumelu as the winner of the election. The House of Representatives, today, sent out a member for improper dressing. The member, who was on T-shirt and jeans, walked in towards the end of the day’s proceedings, and sat in the section used as an alternative Chamber by the members. Raising a point of order, Billy Osaweru (APC, Edo) drew the attention of the House to the mode of dressing, which he said contravened the dress code for members of the House. The House rules prescribe suit and tie or complete traditional attire for members attending plenary. Raising the point of order, Osaweru said: “Mr. Speaker, our rules state the need for proper dressing while coming for plenary. “Mr. Speaker, if you look upstairs, there is a member in Chamber wearing a T-shirt and jean trousers.” While Osaweru was raising the point of order, the member stood up and walked out of the Chamber with Speaker Tajudeen Abbas saying “point of order complied with”.

  Oba of Benin expresses disappointment over Agba’s sectional representation The Oba of Benin,  Oba Ewuare II, has expressed “total disappointment“ over what he described as the “lopsided representation“ by the immediate past Minister of Budget and National Planning, Prince Clem Agba. The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar said the immediate past Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike’s excessive alcohol damaged his kidney and not poisoning. Atiku, who spoke through his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, said Wike was a victim of self-inflicted alcoholic poisoning. He said Wike should go for confession and not thanksgiving, given his ignoble role in the election in Rivers State. Recall that Wike had alleged that he was poisoned at the PDP secretariat in December 2018. The former governor at a special Thanksgiving service organised in his honour at the St. Peters Deanery, Rumuepirikom, Obio-Akpor, on Sunday, said the poison ravaged his internal organs, affecting his liver and kidneys and almost killed him but for God’s interventions. The Ondo State House of Assembly has confirmed receipt of a letter for medical leave from Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu. The Speaker of the Assembly, Mr Olamide Oladiji in a statement on Tuesday in Akure, explained that the governor asked for 21-day leave for medical treatment abroad starting from June 7 to July 6. According to the letter, the speaker said the leave will be extended to July 6 due to the public holidays on June 12(Democracy Day) and Eid el Kabir on June 28 and June 29. He explained that the governor had stated in the letter that his deputy, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, would act as acting governor for the period he will be away. The speaker, who described the governor as a lover of peace and an apostle of the rule of law, wished him a speedy recovery and a joyful vacation.
