Oredo Council Chairman speaks at a special session of the Global Africa Congress of Journalists (GACJ)

Hon. Evbareke Jenkins Osunde told the journalists’ forum that Local Governments were peculiarly significant to battling Corona Virus in Nigeria

‘’ Governor Obaseki’s combination of competent technocracy and efficient political management remarkably moderated the devastation of the pandemic in Edo State’’, Hon. Osunde

‘’In the battle against the deadly and sinister Covid-19, the competence of third tier administrations either as City Governments , Mayors or Local  Councils  is unquestionably a crucial factor in combating the global pandemic’’, according to  Oredo Local Government Chairman, Hon. Evbareke Jenkins Osunde.

Hon. Osunde made the observation yesterday during a virtual interactive session with the Health Committee of the Los Angeles (California)-based media practitioners’ organization, the Global Africa Congress of Journalists (GACJ).   The Health Committee is conducting interviews and meetings with selected 100 Mayors and Council Chairmen particularly from Africa and other parts of the world. Hon. Osunde also serves as the Edo State Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON).

GACJ
is focussed on using the reports for a world-wide media assessment of the essence of basic preventive health care facilities and third tier governance in the well-being of communities especially in situations of pandemic like the Corona Virus and Ebola. Additionally, the forum serves as a platform for beneficial exchange of ideas and experiences between the Local Government leaders and Mayors from different nations on their initiatives against the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Oredo LGA Chairman told the media forum that the Council gained formidable leverage in the public sensitization campaigns against the virus because of the effective leadership and various assistance of Governor Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki.

Hon. Osunde remarked that the Oredo Local Government has always taken issues of healthcare very seriously as ‘’ we did in the efforts to eliminate Polio, revitalization primary healthcare centers, promoting environmental sanitation and vigorously battling the deadly Coronavirus.’’

According to Hon. Osunde, the Oredo Council duly responded to the first wave of the virus ‘’ by launching intensive compliance with  wearing of face-masks and social distancing campaigns, we moved traders from popular markets to locations where they could be conveniently tested for the virus,  we fumigated locations of public gathering   just as we did to schools to ensure safety of students and teachers while adhering to State Government protocols, indeed, it was a comprehensive battle against the virus.’’

The Council Chairman concluded his 80-minute appearance at the forum with a declaration that ‘’ Oredo will stay vigilantly on the frontlines to combat the spread of the virus’’ expressing confidence that Edo State Government’s commitment’’ to protect the citizens from the sinister pandemic cannot be underestimated. ‘’
