Association of Edo State Practicing Butchers, Ikpoba-Okha LGA has embarked on a massive rehabilitation of its facility at Ikpoba Slope in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Benin City, the Edo State capital
Speaking during the rehabilitation exercise on Thursday, Chairman, Association of Edo State Practicing Butchers, Comrade Akhere Odijie decried the poor state of the facility owing to prolonged reckless abandon by successive association's leadership
Comrade Odijie said he could not imagine continuous propagation of an unpopular and anti-people administration, hence his resolve to give the facility a facelift
Speaking during an interview, Comrade Odijie said, "this is the alma mater of butchers in Edo State, this facility has been abandoned for over ten years, it was discovered that successive leaderships deliberately abandoned for undisclosed reasons, and as a result exposing traders and customers to dangerous health situations, for me that has to stop"
"We are deploying first class materials to make sure we bring back the descent nature this facility use to wear so that after slaughtering, we are able to convey the products to the meat market for safe, healthy and clean sales to customers"
"We have brought down the tall trees, we want to reinforce the concrete, clear the overgrown grasses, desilt the gutters, fill the grand which has taken over fifteen trips of sand with more to come, plant flowers, clean up the entire abbatoir and be able to secure the health of people that come here daily for business"
Towards curtailing a possible overflow of the surrounding river, Comrade Odijie has appealed to the Ikpoba-Okha Local and Edo State Governments to come to their aide by getting a swamp buggy to help traverse the buggy swamp terrain; "the river has overfilled its bank, they should help us with swamp buggy at least for one week to help us desilt the river to enable an easy flow of the water" Comrade Odijie requested
The Association's Chairman has said that by the end of July, the facility, which rehabilitation exercise has been on for over a month, will be set for commissioning during which security apparatus will be deployed to forestall indiscriminate dumping of refuse that has hitherto been the regular practice
Meanwhile, the Executive Chairman of Ikpoba-Okha Local Government, Dr. Eric Osayande has promised to wade into the poor state of the facility to assist the association in their effort to revamp the abbatoir; the Council boss said as part of his administration's market restructuring programme, the Ikpoba Slope abbatoir will feature prominently in the Local Government's ongoing developmental programme
Osayande has however commended Comrade Akhere Odijie for his foresight, determination and drive in refocusing the association for optimum service delivery noting that his administration will continue to solidify the relationship between the association and the Ikpoba-Okha Local Government
Members of the association has declared unanimous support for Godwin Obaseki second term bid saying that the Government is "godsent"
