The Edo State branch of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has issued a vehement statement of condemnation in response to the rape and murder of Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa , a 100-level student of  University of Benin

The Association in a statement to the media expressed absolute revulsion at the grave crime which took place at a Pentecostal Church in Benin where the UNIBEN student had sought to study in a quiet environment. The statement reflected that the student was raped and her head smashed with a fire extinguisher which ultimately caused her death .

According to the State Chairman of ALGON, Hon. Evbareke Jenkins Osunde, ‘’ the rape and murder of  Vera Uwaila Omozuwa represents an act of crude bestiality in gross conflict with the cherished norms of our rapidly evolving humane society’’. Hon. Osunde who is also the chairman of Oredo Local Government Council remarked that the entire leadership of the 18 local councils in Edo State was collectively shocked
with anger and disgust over the incident regarding Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa

The State ALGON further observed that the action of the perpetrators of the crime ‘’ constituted a despicable aberration and regrettable abnormality in a state where the Governor has increasingly and successfully made the reign of peace as well as the security of life and property one of its cardinal principles’’. The Association commended the Governor for the stern directive given to the relevant
agencies of law enforcement in the state to ensure a prompt arrest of the person ( or persons) responsible for the abominable crime.

Hon. Osunde concluded that the memory of Miss Vera Omozuwa will be evergreen, adding that the incident should spur increased commitment to empowerment of women and the essence of the female gender as a sacred part of the society .
